Celebrating Black History Month
Throughout October, every class is learning about the achievements and contributions of Black Britons, past and present.
This October, classes across Bluebird are celebrating Black History Month with special assemblies, stories and learning woven through the curriculum.
Our youngest children have been enjoying Handa's Surprise, while Year 2 have been reading Floella Benjamin's Coming to England and writing about her journey from Trinidad. In Year 4, children have discovered that Roman Britain was home to people from across the empire, including Septimius Severus, the emperor born in North Africa who died in York. Year 6 have been finding out about the Black servicemen and women who served Britain in the Second World War, including RAF navigator Johnny Smythe and Lilian Bader, one of the first Black women to serve in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force.
Our assemblies have celebrated people such as Mary Seacole, Walter Tull and the composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. See what each class is learning on this month's learning.
